President of the Scientific Committee of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation. Scientific Coordinator of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation for the European Project "MedDiet, Mediterranean Diet and Enhancement of Traditional Foodstuff".

Dr. Ramon Estruch has been a Senior Consultant at the Internal Medicine Service of Hospital Clínic (Barcelona) since 2002. He has also been an associate lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona since 1996 and a member of the European Union ERAB Advisory Board since 2011.

His main research areas are:

  1. Cardiovascular effects of the Mediterranean diet.
  2. Mechanisms of the beneficial effects of moderate wine and beer consumption
  3. Effects on the expression and function of cellular and endothelial adhesion molecules related to onset of atherosclerosis
  4. Effects of chronic alcohol consumption on the heart, liver and brain.
  5. Effects of olive oil, nuts and cocoa in lipid profile and inflammatory biomarkers related to atherosclerosis.
Over the last few years, his group has received grants from the European Commission; USA National Institute of Health (NIH); CICYT; the National Institute of Agro-food Research (INIA) of the Ministry of Education and Science, Health Research Fund (FIS); and the Carlos III Health Institute of the Ministry of Health (ISCIII). Dr. Estruch also leads the ‘Mediterranean Diet and Cardiovascular Disease’ Thematic Network, part of the ISCIII (Spain), and he is the coordinator of the PREDIMED study involving some 7,500 participants at high vascular risk. This study has demonstrated the effects of the Mediterranean diet and its main components on primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Ramon Estruch has published over 200 articles in the most significant journals, including: The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Annals of Neurology and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. All of these studies have been undertaken in conjunction with the following universities: Columbia University in New York; Loma Linda University in California; Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts; Human Nutrition Research Centre at Tufts University, Massachusetts, USA, and Mario Negri Sud, Santa Maria d’Imbaro, Italy.
