Miguel Talavera Rubia

Researcher at IFAPA. Government of Andalucia

BSc (1988) and PhD (1993) in Biological Sciences from the University of Granada.

He completed his doctoral thesis at the Zaidín-CSIC Experimental Station in the field of Agricultural Nematology on drought survival strategies of plant-parasitic nematode populations.

He later held two 2-year post-doctoral posts at the International Institute of Parasitology (CABI) in the United Kingdom studying the biodiversity, taxonomy and systematics of plant-parasitic nematodes in Andalusian grassland and drylands, and at the National Agricultural Research Center in Tsukuba, Japan, researching biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes, particularly the combined use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and bacterial parasites of nematodes, PGPRs and biopesticides.

He returned to Spain with a post at the National Museum of Natural Science-CSIC involving studies of nematode biodiversity in grasslands; a post-doctoral grant from the National Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA) in the Department for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Balearic Islands involving plant-parasitic nematode management strategies, and a Ramón y Cajal contract at the Andalusian Institute for Agricultural and Fishing Research and Training (IFAPA) involving biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes.

Since becoming a researcher he has worked on issues related to soil nematodes and plant-parasitic nematodes.

He has been a staff researcher in the crop protection area at IFAPA since 2007. His primary interests are the management and control (biological, physical and chemical) of populations of plant-parasitic nematodes, and the study of biodiversity of soil nematodes and their use as an indicator of ecological conditions and soil health.
