Control of the main postharvest diseases of citrus fruits has changed over the past
decade worldwide as a result of sustained scientific research carried out by a number
of research groups as well as the efforts of agrochemical companies to develop and
market products and systems tailored to specific markets or end customers (such as
conventional production, integrated production, organic production, or zero-waste
production).
As a result, citrus packers and warehousers now have a broad range of strategies to
control the main types of postharvest rot - those caused by Penicillium digitatum, P.italicum, Geotrichum citri-aurantiï, and others. After many years of research, lowtoxicity salts (such as sorbates or bicarbonates), essential oils, hot water treatments,
peroxide-based oxidative treatments, and even new synthetic fungicides such as
propiconazole are now reasonable and available options for the citrus industry.

Nevertheless, these strategies have varying degrees of effectiveness; citrus operators
need to be aware of them and determine how and when to use each one according to
the stage in the season, the varieties involved, storage and other conditions, and
intended markets and customers.
The specificities of postharvest treatment at each citrus packing plant inequivocally
determine the treatment's effectiveness; highly effective methods or products may fail if
application is poorly managed. It is therefore essential to adjust and fine-tune all the
relevant variables, such as drench flow rate and time, hot bath renewal and filtering,
nozzle flow rate, and ratio per ton of treated fruit. Only thus can optimal rot control be
achieved within the scope of each treatment, and overall control strategies optimized
according to each company's circumstances.
