Botrytis bunch rot of grapes in New Zealand is caused primarily by Botrytis cinerea and has been responsible for crop losses of up to 35%, when preharvest climatic conditions have favoured disease development. Management of botrytis in conventional vineyards before 2000 depended upon regular applications of fungicide. However, this practice became unsustainable as constraints on detectable pesticide residues in wines increased and organic wine production gained momentum worldwide. New Zealand wine producers quickly adopted practices to ensure that wines were free of detectable pesticide residues, including the removal from recommended spray programmes of mid- and late season fungicides (e.g. iprodione) known to result in detectable residues in wine. Highly effective, persistent botryticides were confined to early season application (e.g. flowering) to ensure wines were residue free. However, this strategy did not provide effective botrytis control when weather conditions after the early season period and, in particular, after veraison favoured B. cinerea infection. These findings highlighted the need for alternative strategies to protect developing berries. In this presentation we review a) biologically based alternatives to fungicides,b) enhanced grape berry resistance to B. cinerea using foliar calcium sprays, and c) the contribution of canopy management in controlling botrytis bunch rot.
