IPM Strategies in La Rioja (Spain)

José Luis Ramos Sáez d'Ojer

Crop Protection Unit, Food Research and Technological Development Office, Government of La Rioja.

In compliance with RD 1311/2012 of 14 September, which establishes the framework for the sustainable use of plant protection products, all holdings must have a system of integrated pest management in place by 1 January 2014. This shall take the form of practices involving low consumption of plant protection products, with priority being given whenever possible to non-chemical methods and to those practices and products that minimize risk to human health and the environment. Wine-growers are at an advantage in this respect, as they have been moving for years toward more integrated management methods that make use of all resources available for controlling the pests that affect their crops. La Rioja’s Agricultural Warning Station, part of the Government of La Rioja’s Crop Protection Unit (CIDA), working in conjunction with Plant Health Offices in other Autonomous Regions of Spain, has taken on a key role in this integrated management, conducting trials and transmitting findings to sector stakeholders through  publication in the region’s phytosanitary news bulletin. This paper examines how to achieve integrated management of the main pests and diseases affecting vineyards in this region.
