Grapevines are grown on roughly 10 million hectares across various continents. Spain is the leading country in the world in terms of crop land area whereas ranks second in production by weight. Vineyards can be found in most of Spanish regions, which are home to more than 50 grape-growing regions with DO (Designation of Origin) protection.

Grapevine trunk diseases caused by pathogenic fungi, such as esca, Eutypa dieback, Botryosphaeria dieback, and Petri and ‘black-foot’ diseases, are among the main plant pathologies faced by grape-growers around the world.

There has been an increasing interest over the past twenty years in conducting research on these diseases, since a progressive increase in the incidence of grapevine trunk diseases has been noticed in all grape-growing countries  around the world. It is thought that factors contributing to the increased incidence of these diseases in both young and mature vines include changes to several farming practices, such as reduced protection of pruning wounds and the use of propagation material with poor sanitary conditions.

Another contributing factor may have been the banning of sodium arsenite in most countries, which was thought to control these diseases through pruning wound protection. It has been considered that diseases affecting young and mature plants are closely interrelated, and it is necessary to jointly address the study of biological aspects of these diseases and their control measures. This contribution offers an update on the most recent advances in our knowledge about grapevine trunk diseases at both national and international level, by examining some interesting issues on the biology, epidemiology and the development of control methods of these diseases.
