Integrated Pest Management of the European Grapevine Moth (Lobesia botrana)

Integrated pest management seeks to minimize the use of chemical products by utilizing all resources available to inhibit the development of harmful organisms. For years integrated pest management has been used on grapes, and the Estaciones de Avisos, a plant-protection alert system of the Plant Health Service (Servicio de Sanidad Vegetal), under the promotion and guidance of the technicians of the Plant Defense Groups (Agrupaciones de Defensa Vegetal, or ADV), has been instrumental in the development of the approach.

The European grapevine moth is the most harmful and widespread pest affecting grapes. The severity of its impact stems directly from crop loss and indirectly from the wounds left by larvae on the berries; under certain climate conditions, the appearance of these wounds facilitates infection by different types of rot (Botrytis cinerea, Rhizopus nigricans, Aspergillus niger, and acid rot).

In most cases, the European grapevine moth has three complete generations, although a fourth, partial generation can develop when temperatures in the late summer and early autumn are mild. Currently, the monitoring of populations of this pest together with the recommendations provided for controlling it are an example of the adaptation of precision management to integrated management of this pest.

Sex pheromone traps are used to follow the flight curve of the adult moths of each generation, making it possible to determine the moment in which the grape bunches should be inspected for eggs. Such monitoring is crucial for determining populations of the pest and for establishing when to apply treatment. Calculations of population densities are based on two factors: percentage of grapes affected (infestation level) and number of larval nests per 100 clusters (infestation intensity).

Regarding the tactics employed, when synthetic chemicals are used in pest management, each group of recommended products must be applied in the precise moment according to its effect: first flight, egg-laying period, beginning of egg-hatching, and peak hatching (30-80% hatching). Because of the effects of each product, application at inappropriate times decreases its effectiveness substantially. For this precision-based approach, each of these stages must be indicated for the different grape-growing areas, thus requiring close coordination between the aforementioned Estacions de Avisos of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Food, and the Environment and the Plant Defense Groups. The two products currently authorized for use in organic farming are Spinosad and Bacillus thuringiensis, both at the onset of egg hatching.

The technique known as sexual confusion is currently considered a consolidated method, though certain minimum conditions must be met, such as a minimum area of application where all plots of land receive the treatment, proper orographic conditions, proper dispenser deployment, and sufficient familiarity with the area so as to identify problematic areas requiring vigilance.
