Stone fruit lepidoptera

Fabio Molinari

Faculty of Agriculture. Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

An overview is given on the means and strategies applied for the control of the major lepidopteran species damaging stone fruits: Cydia molesta on peach, Anarsia lineatella on peach, apricot and plum, and C. funebrana on plum are considered, and some aspects of their life cycles are analysed for improving their effective and safe management.

Cydia molesta is damaging mainly peach in most areas where the crop is grown, and in the last decades it became a serious pest of pome fruits as well. Anarsia lineatella also attacks peach, being one of the key pests of almond and apricot; plum is an occasional host.

Cydia molesta is damaging mainly peach in most areas where the crop is grown, and in the last decades it became a serious pest of pome fruits as well. Anarsia lineatella also attacks peach, being one of the key pests of almond and apricot; plum is an occasional host. It can be found only in the northern hemisphere. Cydia funebrana can be found on some Prunus species but it causes economic damage only to plum fruits in the Palearctic region.

Since several years ago, all these carpophagous species of lepidoptera can be effectively controlled by the use of different commercial products based on synthetic pheromones, and in some situations, even with the addition of no chemical insecticides. Nevertheless, insecticides are still the most widely applied means of control, used as a supplement in pheromone-based strategies or in chemical-only strategies.

Many new active ingredients have been developed in these last years, all showing abetter environmental profile than in the past; as chlorantraniliprole, emamectin, spinosad, methoxyfenozide, etofenprox, and others give a wide choice to the grower, which have different modes of action.

The improved selectivity of many new insecticides involves the need for a very precise timing in order to achieve the maximum efficacy; for this reason a good knowledge of some specific aspects of the biology of target pests is necessary and skills are required for the use of means available for monitoring and forecasting pest development. Monitoring is based on pheromone traps, that are highly reliable for C. molesta, and field observations of larval activity; forecasting models have been developed for C. molesta and C. funebrana
