Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is a pest native to the United States and is currently distributed to all temperate zones in the world. Is one of the key pests in crops both outdoors and in greenhouses, and an horticultural, stone fruit, forage, or cut flower industry crop pest. In stone fruits there are different species of thrips able to do direct damage to the fruit and indirect damages caused by the transmission of viruses and/or bacterioses such Thaeniothrips meridionalis Priesner, Thrips major Uzel and F. Occidentalis.

In stone fruits there are different species of thrips able to do direct damage to the fruit and indirect damages caused by the transmission of viruses and/or bacterioses such Thaeniothrips meridionalis Priesner, Thrips major Uzel and F. Occidentalis.

The last two species are the most problematic during fruit ripening. Controlling thrips is difficult due to their great polyphagia, high population density, short life cycle that results in a high number of generations per year and the rapid population increases that may arise. Currently, insecticide treatments are the main control method, however, it should be most effective if other important criteria such as the management of plant cover, of the surrounding crops and of their own crop would also be considered. The most used insecticide products are Spinosad, Taufluvalinate, Acrinatrin and Chlorpyrifos-ethyl among others.

However, due to the high capacity of the species to develop resistance to the insecticides, the limited number of effective active ingredients available and the increasingly large market restrictions about the number of active ingredients detected in the fruit, it is essential, besides obtaining new suitable active ingredients, search for other alternatives to the chemical control methods.

One of the options currently being studied in the area of Lleida is the biological control through predacious mites. The two most common species are Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) and Amblyseius swirskii Athias - Henriot, although other species are also being used as Iphiseus degenerans (Berlesse), N. californicous (McGregor) or A. andersoni (Chant), this one native in the area and the main biological control of spider mites in apple agent.
