The complex of foliar fungal diseases of olive tree called repilos in Spain is the most important plant health problem of olive groves worldwide causing serious epidemics that lead to intense defoliation and weakening of the diseased trees. The three main components of this disease complex are leaf spot or scab (repilo in Spanish) caused by Spilocaea oleagina, cercosporiose due to Pseudocercospora cladosporioides and anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp.

In this paper the current status of integrated disease management of the repilos complex with emphasis on the first two diseases is reviewed. Traditionally, management of foliar fungal diseases in olive groves has been based on the most important disease of this complex: the scab caused by S.

Traditionally, management of foliar fungal diseases in olive groves has been based on the most important disease of this complex: the scab caused by S. oleagina. In the past two decades, advances in knowledge about the disease cycles and epidemiology in the repilos complex are enabling the design of specific strategies and methods that are most effective for the control of these diseases. Cultural practices are an essential part for the management of the repilos complex, highlighting those measures that promote aeration of the tree canopy, such as location, orientation and density of planting, and especially pruning. It is also very important to use a balanced fertilizer, avoiding excessive nitrogen and potassium or calcium deficiencies.

The effect of new cultural practices on the repilos complex, such as cover crops or hedge plantations, although not well known, should be considered. The choice of cultivar for planting is an agronomic measure that has not been used specifically for the control of olive diseases, but the knowledge gained in the past two decades on the genetic resistance of numerous cultivars to the repilos complex, with availability of new genotypes from breeding programs, indicate thatthis measure should be considered for future plantings. Foliar spraying of fungicides, especially copper products, has become a routine practice in olive groves to control the repilos complex. However, the need for sustainable use of fungicides requires the incorporation of forecasting systems for epidemics and new active substances and products to increase their effectiveness and better integration with other control methods. Thus, fungicide treatments will be used only when all other control measures are inadequate.

Finally, the biological control of repilos, as with other diseases of olive, is still a challenge for current research, which should be intensified in order to have effective biological solutions against these diseases in a context of integrated management, helping to minimize the environmental impact of control methods.
