New weeds are appearing in our crops with increasing frequency. This is part of the general problem caused by exotic invasive species to the natural environment at large.
When a new species turns up, the question arises as to whether it will become invasive.

An invasive plant is a non-native plant that has become naturalized.
In practice, plants have invasive potential if they meet the criteria proposed by Maillet and Zaragoza (2002):
a) They are not widespread in the area to be protected
b) They are dangerous due to their growth rate, spreading capability, urticating effects on humans, and manifest noxiousness to crops in other countries.
c) Their emergence is staggered throughout the growth cycle.

Key factors identified in relation to weed eradication include the timing of procedures, the criteria used to establish when extinction has been achieved, and the identification of weed entry and expansion pathways. Prevention is the most effective measure against invasive plants.

Experience has shown that controlling and eradicating an invasive plant species is extremely difficult, and success is strictly bound to quick detection and swift action while the weed is still confined to a small area: no more than 1 km2 in surface area, and involving no more than 5 fields.

After 5 years of fighting S. angulatus L., the key factors that currently provide any hope of controlling and eradicating this invasive plant are:
-the existence of a network of associates working in the field;
-speedy government action based on the powers granted by Spain’s Plant Health Act (BOE, 2002);
-the cooperation of farmers.

Our experience with Sicyos and Leptochloa has shown that it makes a difference whether the weed grows in water: success is more difficult to achieve in such cases, because the greater possibilities for dispersion make the weed much harder to contain within a confined space that can restricted to a smaller area year after year.
