A broad spectrum of insects and mites now affect vegetable crops in Spain and require control measures during crop development. However, there are also other species that could develop in these crops, which are not currently present or not widespread in Spain and may be accidentally introduced. Drawing on the EPPO quarantine pest lists and personal experience, this presentation will look at the following species as potential new problems:

Bactericera spp. (Hemiptera: Triozidae). This genus includes B. trigonica in carrots, B. tremblayi in leeks and onions, and B. cockerelli in solanaceous crops. All three appear to have the potential to transmit Candidatus Liberibacter solanaceraum

Thrips palmi (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). This widely distributed species has been intercepted frequently in several European countries. Polyphagous on Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae.

Amauromyza maculosa (Diptera: Agromyzidae). This polyphagous species originating from America could be a problem for ornamental plants and lettuces.

Liriomyza sativa (Diptera: Agromyzidae). Present in all continents except Europe. Polyphagous species.

Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A widely distributed species in the Americas, it is a highly polyphagous species with over 100 known hosts.

Spodoptera spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). In addition to the species of this genus already present in Spain, we must also consider S. litura, present in Asia and Oceania, and the American species S. eridania and S. frugiperda. All 3 species are polyphagous.

Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). This species is present in various African countries, and has been intercepted on citrus fruit imports in several European countries. As a fairly polyphagous species, it may pose a problem to pepper crops.
