Generally speaking, the heterogeneous geographical environment in which olives are cultivated, their varietal diversity and cultural management techniques are the key factors affecting the incidence of harmful organisms. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) must adapt to this variability. Monitoring and risk assessment must be adapted to the various pests and diseases taking into account the particularities of each plantation, as must preventive and/or cultural measures. Thresholds need to be established, or intervention times in the case of harmful agents for which such information is not available, and the most effective and efficient alternative or chemical control measure must be chosen following IPM criteria.

That is why the Network of Plant Health Alert Stations of Catalonia (XEACAT) is a key tool for checking harmful organisms that affect different crops. The technical staff of the Plant Health Service perform the various functions of the network in collaboration with the Plant Protection Groupings. In the case of olive trees, the XEACAT focuses on the following pests and diseases: the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae), the olive moth (Prays oleae), and secondary pests such as Saissetia oleae, Phloetribus scarabaeoides, Euzophera pinguis, etc. The principal diseases are the fungal plant pathogen causing olive peacock spot (Spilocaea oleagina) and anthracnose of olives (Colletotrichum acutatum). Other pathogens with less impact in our region that can affect olives include Pseudomonas savastanoi, Capnodium alaeophilium, Armillaria mellea, and Verticilium spp.

One of the main challenges in IPM is the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae), which is considered to be the most prevalent olive pest, and there is no clear correlation between the population level and the treatment threshold. The timing, severity and explosiveness of the attack depend on the biology of the fly, on varietal sensitivity, the area, weather conditions, and cultural measures. These factors mean that the attack is very irregular; however, there are areas in which the whole generation is at a very similar stage. Since these insects are able to travel long distances, reducing pest populations and incidence requires coordinated treatments performed jointly on specific dates in as wide an area as possible. Olive fruit fly control therefore requires coordination between technical staff and farmers.

The XEACAT performs this function: homogeneous areas are established in which several farms are monitored, using qualitative and quantitative controls on the basis of criteria harmonised between the technical staff to determine the attack index, population level and the status of each generation. Data is sent periodically to an IT platform where it is processed to generate the various plant health alerts. There are various kinds of alerts that depend on the type of agriculture (organic or conventional), the product to be used, the area to be covered and the optimal dates for treatment. Finally, the plant health alert is notified to farmers in several ways: voice mail, website, email, telephone messages or SMS, announcements, etc.
