Challenges of IPM Methodology on Vine
Joan Esteve Julia
Technical Director of Viticulture at the Codorniu Group

Codorniu-Raventós is a company with more than 450 years of winemaking tradition and is dedicated to producing and selling quality wines.
The vine is one of a few crop plants for which maximum income does not depend on maximum production; quality is the decisive factor. The best grapes should be used for the best wines which will command the highest price. Our working philosophy in the vineyards has always been to foster sustainable viticulture with minimum inputs, so that the wines we produce are the best expression of their origin and to ensure that cultivation is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The aim is to act only when absolutely necessary and to do so as efficiently as possible.
About 14 years ago, after several years of testing along with the Government of Catalonia’s Plant Health service, we decided to treat 2,000 hectares of vines on the Raimat estate in Lleida with mating disruption methods to control the European Grapevine Moth (Lobesia botrana). This was a total success: not only did we manage to control the grapevine moth better than ever, but since then we have stopped using anti-Botrytis products. This approach was implemented in 2007 in the Penedès region, grouping neighbouring wine growers together into sufficiently compact control areas. Today we can say that 75% of the wines produced by the Group are completely insecticide-free and 60% are free from anti-Botrytis fungicides.
Monitoring is another important area of work. First a transition period was needed, in which we went from taking estate-wide decisions at variety level, then at plot level, and finally we decided on actions to be taken at Differentiated Management Area level within each plot. Vigour mapping is used as a basis for conducting analytical inspections and decisions are taken concerning treatments, irrigation or fertilisers in each Differentiated Management Area within every plot.
