Challenges of IPM methodology in peach production

Jordi Cambray Sala
Technical Coordinator of the Fruit.Net Committee for stone fruit

The basic principles of integrated pest management (IPM) are well known and applied in much of the peach production area in Catalonia.

This is partly owing to the excellent work carried out by technical advisors and ADVs (plant protection associations). For the main insects, the flights of successive generations are tracked using monitoring traps, or degree-days are calculated to apply treatments at the optimum time or to use mating disruption of Lepidoptera at the optimum time. Diseases are generally controlled by alternating families of active ingredients to avoid generating resistance.

The main pests and diseases of peach trees in our region are aphids, Anarsia and Grapholita, thrips, powdery mildew, Monilinia, and fruit flies. Thrips and Monilinia are two key pests that pose a challenge to IMP methodology.

Thrips cause superficial damage to the fruit, which results in a loss of market value. Currently, there is no clear threshold to decide on plant protection treatment, nor are there sufficiently developed alternative control techniques.

Monilia is the main disease of stone fruit in our region. Plant protection products are applied according to climatic conditions and by the calendar (without following a prediction model), and fungicide families are alternated in an effort to avoid resistance. These approaches entail two problems. Firstly, using plant protection products according to climatic conditions does not guarantee that the treatment is applied at the most appropriate time to control the disease, and it is usually necessary to apply further treatments. This leads to the second problem: residues. Some retail chains set limits on the maximum amount of residues that may be present in fruits. In some cases, these limits can be in breach of the principles of IPM. The Fruit.Net programme endeavours to provide producers with new tools, such as developing predictive models for fungal diseases.
