Thrips are small insect pests of peach and nectarine cultivation throughout the world. While each country has its own mixture of species the global colonisation of the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) in the 1980s and 1990s has intensified the challenge to develop successful and sustainable thrips pest management in stonefruit. Several characteristics of thrips in stonefruit make them particularly problematic pests: they are r-strategists, being very effective colonists (i.e. highly mobile, highly fecund, with overlapping and short generation times), they are direct pests of flowers and fruits, and some species rapidly develop resistance to insecticides. Thrips are not known to transmit virus diseases to stonefruit. Thrips feeding damage on nectarine flower ovaries and fruitlets results in scarring and irregularly-shaped blocks of russet which become more apparent as the fruit grows. Large infestations of thrips in flowers may lead to fruit drop. Thrips adults are attracted to ripening nectarine and peach fruit where they feed and lay eggs. Feeding causes discolouring, russetting and speckling of the fruit and the presence of thrips eggs, larvae and adults is of phytosanitory concern. Despite the best endeavours of researchers, insecticides remain the main tactic for thrips management. The ability of some thrips species to quickly colonise orchards in large numbers, the potential for non-target insecticidal impact on pollinators at flowering, and the need to observe withholding periods in the face of increasing thrips infestation at harvest are severe limitations to effective management. In many jurisdictions there are few effective registered active ingredients for thrips on stonefruit. Recent developments in our understanding of thrips semiochemicals (aggregation pheromones, kairomones) may provide additional tools for pest management such as improved monitoring, mass trapping, and lure and kill, but these tactics are yet to be included in commercial Integrated Pest Management programmes in stonefruit.
