Cacopsylla pyri (L.) – The challenges of IPM methodology in pear trees. Main difficulties of applying IPM for producers.

Edison Pasqualini

The main pear-growing regions of the world are China, Europe, and the United States. In Europe, Italy and Spain are the main producers with approximately 35% and 20% of total production, respectively. Emilia-Romagna has about 20,000 hectares of pear trees.

Cacopsylla pyri (L.) (Hemiptera Psyllidae) is constantly present and regularly sprayed to avoid economic loss. Damages are both direct (through removal of nutrients) and indirect (fruit is tainted by the honeydew produced by all larval instars). C. pyri also transmits the Pear Decline phytoplasma.
Pear psylla produces 4-5 generations per year. The second is the most dangerous. IPM should consider basic agronomic practices (resistant varieties, appropriate fertilization, balanced pruning, etc.) to contain the development of pear psylla populations, while control as such should be based on multi-tactical approaches, with tandem use of selective insecticides and stimulation of natural biological control. Anthocoris nemoralis (F.) is the main predator of C. pyri, but does not resolve infestation. To promote the prey/predator relationship, spraying against C. pyri should be avoided in autumn and winter, and specific insecticides (which are still irreplaceable) should be applied only against an impending threat. Abamectin, spirotetramat and spinetoram (not registered in Italy) may lessen the present critical status because they are effective and more or less selective, and therefore tolerable in IPM. Other harmful species (e.g., Cydia pomonella (L), tortricids, etc.) must be controlled with selective chemical insecticides or available biorational techniques (pheromones, natural products, etc.). IPM can prevent pear psylla from taking on the role of a key pest.
