In the 2006-07 season, the first outbreak of Tuta absoluta in southeast Spain spread very rapidly and caused significant losses of tomato crops over the following two years. Incorporating new biological control techniques and registering the most effective plant protection products were vital to rapidly implement effective plant protection strategies. In summer 2013, a new plant pathogen identified as Tomato leaf curl New Delhi Virus (ToLCNDV), transmitted by the vector Bemisia tabaci, caused extensive damage to courgette crops and, to a lesser extent, other cucurbit crops in southeast Spain.

To manage these complex plant diseases, it is necessary to establish strategies that include hygiene measures, both prior to planting and during cultivation and subsequent stages, to reduce virus reservoirs. In the case of protected crops, physical barriers are important to mitigate the risk of colonisation. Traps may also be a good complement to these hygiene and isolation measures.

There are many natural enemies of both Tuta and the whitefly Bemisia that should be used for control, in addition to appropriate use of plant protection products.

Plant disease problems as different as Tuta and ToLCNDV require complex strategies that combine a range of tools. However, the lower the disease pressure is, the more effective these will be.

Drawing up Joint Action Plans that implement measures and actions across regions or production areas can reduce plant disease pressure. Such plans require solidarity among farmers, increasing the amount of beneficial insect–attracting plants on plantations and areas of natural vegetation, and the participation of the authorities in transfer, monitoring and other specific actions.
